Is Laser Hair Removal Worth It?

By 6th December 2021Laser Treatment

How Does it Work?

Laser hair removal works by sending a laser directly to the root of your hair. The light is attracted to the pigment in your hair and converts to heat, destroying the active hair follicles. This prevents further growth.
You will require multiple sessions, but this all depends on several factors, including skin tone, hair type and body location.

How to Prepare

Prior to the treatment, you will need to avoid waxing, tweezing and anything else that removes hair from the root. Two weeks before your appointment, you will need to avoid the sun as it may cause side effects.

Laser hair removal heats up your skin as it blasts the follicles, so it is important to cool it down afterwards to avoid redness. Exercise should be avoided up to 48 hours post treatment as well as any activities that will encourage sweating.

In addition to this, sunlight exposure can damage your skin and your aesthetician can advise about skincare and SPF. Fake tan will also need to be scrubbed off prior to treatment as the colour can get into the hair follicle. This impacts the laser catching the natural pigment in the hair.

You should also avoid waxing, plucking, or threading the treated areas in between treatments, so the hair follicles are intact for effective treatment.

What Areas Can be Treated?

The most common areas for laser hair treatment are the legs, underarms and bikini area. However, you can have almost any area treated. This includes the lips, chin, arms and stomach.

Are there any side effects?

You should always expect side effects. Some pinkness and swelling are very normal, alongside small bumps. This is due to the swelling of the follicles beneath your skin. You may also notice some black specks which is the dead hair shedding. This means the treatment has worked.

Some unwanted side effects can include blisters, scabbing or hyperpigmentation.

Is it Safe?

Laser hair removal should always be carried out by a fully qualified practitioner or dermatologist. You should never cut corners. Do not be afraid to ask for a consultation before an appointment to discuss the procedure.
