Acne Treatment Adult Acne affects 25% of all men and 50% of all women at some point in their adult lives. The affects of acne can be difficult to cope with and cause anxieties such as depression and low self esteem. Although the causes of adult acne are unknown, it is thought that they may have hormonal roots, and can be affected further by vitamin deficiency, diet and stress. Acne is caused when the follicles, often called pores, becomes blocked by sebum, which in normal circumstances drains to the surface, but in cases of acne, the sebum becomes trapped in the follicle and resulting bacteria grows. Acne Vulgaris is the most common form of acne, classified by whiteheads, blackheads, pustules and papules, although severe acne Vulgaris can be characterised by cysts and nodules. Another from of acne: Acne Rosacea can look similar to the aforementioned acne Vulgaris, and the two types of acne are sometimes confused for one another. It appears as a red rash, normally confined to the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin. Left untreated, it can cause swelling of the nose and the growth of excess tissue, a condition called rhinophyma. Amongst the numerous prescriptive and over the counter medications, light therapy is regarded as a unique treatment for acne problems. The Intense Pulsed Light system releases yellow, green, and red light, emitted in a series of short pulses. The yellow/ green light destroys the bacteria in the follicles whilst the red light targets the over productive sebaceous glands which are the cause of outbreaks of pustules.>>>>> next |
